NM Police Sergeant Arrested for Night Vision Theft

New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau agents began looking into a theft on March 13, 2025, at the New Mexico Army National Guard facility located at 249 North Armory Road in Las Cruces. According to the investigation, Santiago Pacheco—a New Mexico State Police officer and sergeant with the National Guard—and one other soldier were present during the inventory of sensitive items in February and March 2025. It is alleged that they took three pairs of night vision goggles.

Santiago Pacheco was arrested and charged on April 8, 2025, with third-degree felony larceny and fourth-degree felony conspiracy to commit larceny. He was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center and placed on standard administrative leave from the New Mexico State Police.

New Mexico State Police Chief Troy Weisler stated that the arrest is a serious matter for the department, emphasizing their commitment to high accountability standards.
